How to apply for an EORI number

The application process explained step by step

At a glance

You apply for an EORI number once, in the EU member state where your business is established. In Germany the application is free and is filed with the customs administration via the customs portal. Processing usually takes a few days to a few weeks, so apply well before your first shipment.

Where do you apply for an EORI number?

You apply in the EU member state where your business is established. In Germany, the responsible body is the customs administration (Generalzolldirektion), and the application is filed online via the customs portal (Zollportal).

If your business is based outside the EU, you apply in the first member state where you lodge a customs declaration. Depending on the country and your situation, you may need a fiscal or customs representative for this.

Which information and documents do you need?

Typically you need your business details (legal name, address, legal form), your tax number or VAT identification number, and the contact details of a responsible person. Sole traders apply with their personal business details.

The exact requirements differ slightly between member states. In Germany, the customs portal guides you through the required fields step by step.

How long does it take and what does it cost?

The application is free of charge in Germany and in most other EU member states. Processing usually takes a few days to a few weeks.

Apply early: without a valid EORI number, your goods cannot be declared and will be held up in the customs procedure. We recommend applying at least a few weeks before your first import or export.

What happens after the application?

Once the application is approved, you receive your EORI number in writing, in Germany usually by letter from the customs administration. The number is valid indefinitely and throughout the entire EU.

You can then check at any time whether your number is active using the European Commission's free validation tool. This is also useful for verifying business partners.

Do I need a new EORI number for every EU country?
No. One EORI number is valid throughout the entire EU, no matter how many member states you trade with.
I already have a VAT ID, do I still need to apply?
Yes. A VAT identification number does not automatically give you an EORI number. They are two separate registrations.
What if my shipment is already on its way?
Without an EORI number, the goods cannot be declared and will be held in the customs procedure. Apply as soon as possible, or contact us and we will help you sort it out.
